I find the entire trail of interest. Looking Glass Rock Trail is a 6.1 mile heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Brevard, North Carolina that features a river and is rated as moderate. I took a,I left Arches around 3 p.m. and drove back through Moab, where I got some gas and a 44-ounce cup of Pepsi and ice (mostly ice), then got back on U.S. 191 and headed south, bound for Looking Glass Rock. There is a small parking lot for 15 cars at the trailhead, but it is often full. Climbing upstream, the trail is high above the water on a narrow bench on the hillside. But many of the trees on Looking Glass have been treated with insecticides and adelgid-eating predator beetles may also be in the area. As of fall 2016, many of the Carolina hemlocks on Looking Glass remain healthy and green. government agencies, and field observations. That sort of perspective, I suppose, can make a person a bit crotchety, a sentiment that I definitely share with Abbey -- though we're decades apart. I hadn’t hiked to Delicate in about 20 years and I was glad to see that it hadn’t changed much – except for the large crowds, of course.I mentioned a naturalist named Edward Abbey in my previous entry. However, the rounded surface at the top gives an optical illusion that it is flat. However, during my last visit, back in 2002, I was a disappointed to see that recent campers had driven their vehicles over the vegetation, so I spent a few hours one morning placing dozens of sandstone rocks around the area, hoping it would prevent folks from driving across the plants. This place is usually booked several weeks in advance but I lucked out and grabbed a cancellation. And it turned out to be the best campsite in the entire campground! I woke to another beautiful, sunny morning in southern Utah and spent a couple hours at the Devil’s Garden campground at Arches National Park, then I packed up and headed out of the campground around 10 a.m.

I hate to admit it, but I'm kind of the same way when it comes to southern Utah, especially given the memories I have of what it used to be like before this area was discovered.

So while you can still camp here, all the plants are still looking beautiful, instead of being trampled by beefy 4x4s. The falls have been kayaked four times that I'm aware of.

This stream drains the left side of the small ridge you'll generally follow all the way up to the summit of the mountain. Corran Addison in the late 80s at low water (broke back), Russ Kullmar from Camp Illahee in the mid-90's at super high water (not hurt), Pat Keller and Austin Rathman around 2005 at super high water (Pat-ok, Austin-busted nose). And I visited Looking Glass Rock several times since then and never saw another soul there. First stop: My favorite arch, Double Arch.Back at the truck I checked the thermometer: a pleasant 96 degrees. But first I wanted to see the new Visitor Center. I advise admiring it from a distance. And for that I was glad. my friend did very well all the way up and 3/4 down, had to help him down the last 500 feet. I had only camped in this campground once before, during my Spring Break trip here with my then-girlfriend Katy in 1982.Man, I loved this campsite. And bless the BLM -- they put in a whole bunch more. Be careful and stay on the flatter rock at the edge of the forest, which isn't too risky if it's dry. The trail slips off to the left side of the main ridge line and then you will cross a small, wet-weather tributary. This is a relatively rare tree which thrives in the thin soils and high exposure areas of North Carolina's rocky mountainsides.
