However, during my last visit, back in 2002, I was a disappointed to see that recent campers had driven their vehicles over the vegetation, so I spent a few hours one morning placing dozens of sandstone rocks around the area, hoping it would prevent folks from driving across the plants. This place is usually booked several weeks in advance but I lucked out and grabbed a cancellation.And it turned out to be the best campsite in the entire campground! I woke to another beautiful, sunny morning in southern Utah and spent a couple hours at the Devil’s Garden campground at Arches National Park, then I packed up and headed out of the campground around 10 a.m.
I hate to admit it, but I'm kind of the same way when it comes to southern Utah, especially given the memories I have of what it used to be like before this area was discovered.
So while you can still camp here, all the plants are still looking beautiful, instead of being trampled by beefy 4x4s. The falls have been kayaked four times that I'm aware of.
This stream drains the left side of the small ridge you'll generally follow all the way up to the summit of the mountain. And I visited Looking Glass Rock several times since then and never saw another soul there. First stop: My favorite arch, Double Arch.Back at the truck I checked the thermometer: a pleasant 96 degrees.But first I wanted to see the new Visitor Center. I advise admiring it from a distance. Dense forests and cool running water lead you onto the hiking trails eager for exploration. And for that I was glad. my friend did very well all the way up and 3/4 down, had to help him down the last 500 feet. I had only camped in this campground once before, during my Spring Break trip here with my then-girlfriend Katy in 1982.Man, I loved this campsite. And bless the BLM -- they put in a whole bunch more. Be careful and stay on the flatter rock at the edge of the forest, which isn't too risky if it's dry. The trail slips off to the left side of the main ridge line and then you will cross a small, wet-weather tributary. This is a relatively rare tree which thrives in the thin soils and high exposure areas of North Carolina's rocky mountainsides.
