There is a very telling scene when she goes to the locker room to change into street clothing.While it’s common enough for filmmakers to spice up their creations with nude scenes, the locker room scene here is very different, matter-of-fact, depicting women immersed within themselves, in their natural state, inwardly absorbed, with no one to impress. It’s a mom and daughter scene, with the expectation of sweetness and a familiar intimacy. Ella never even outright says that she knows, but her understanding that Julia needs to call Daniel from her hospital bed, and the looks she and her mother share in the final moments, say all we need to know. Ella is serene, a mother hen sitting on top of a huge egg. Of course, it has a down side too, as one of her clients freaked out at one point and put her in the hospital. But guess what? And these people are familiar with those awkward moments when the grandparents from one side of the family meets the grandparents of the other side of the family, all wanting to be present at the baby’s birth.A form of patriarchal-matriarchal dueling occurs when Julia picks up her in-laws at JFK.
