My students keep the beginning of most of the lines and develop their own simile (so I get to teach simile at the same time).

It's one of my favorite verse novels (HEARTBEAT by Sharon Creech is amazing, too). When I ask them who they think may be narrating this poem, they suggest a variety of voices, from Walter, to God to even the boy’s future friends or college or job, etc.WOW! Each year, I use Sharon Creech’s book Love That Dog, to introduce poetry to my students.
Here it is in its wonderful entirety: Love that boy, like a rabbit loves to run I said I love that boy like a rabbit loves to run Love to call him in the morning love to call him "Hey there, son!" He walk like his Grandpa, Grins like his Uncle Ben. Before I read the complete poem, I detected a bit of southern charm in his first stanza and have always used that voice in reading it to my class.
I have also started to realize how much poetry enhances other areas of language study.Poetry can be intimidating for kids, so I started breaking down different poems and types of figures of speech into simple activities to help students create their own poetry.Many authors have started writing books that center around poetry but are presented in novel(ish) form. I hope I'll get a chance to visit there.Thank you!
