Twentymile Trail is part of the Benton MacKaye Trail, and connects to the Appalachian Trail (AT).It leads directly to the Shuckstack Fire Tower. But smokies can be wet, so plan for rain - esp in afternoon and overnight! To Me, It Was A Nice Hike If You Have A Couple Of Days With Nothing To Do. It may not seem like much, but it is very steep downhill, and after the strenuous climb, those extra 2.5 miles and 90 minutes were very tough. Continue on Wolf Ridge Trail.Big rock overhang: Perfect place to wait out sudden bad weather, alongside Twentymile Creek. Would do again.Awesome loop hike, definitely one of my favorites in the Smokies and makes for a nice, leisurely weekend. This is a very rewarding loop that can be enhanced even more when the leaves are down - particularly on the ascent up the WRT. Depending on water levels, you may want to bring water shoes for some of the crossings.Great way to access Gregory Bald with little to no people on the trail and some great views. Mid day is a great time for exploring the original cabins and churches. The recent Summer and early Fall have been very dry. Most inexperienced park visitors turn back after about three miles.

It's not clear whether this high elevation meadow was created by nature, or was cleared by some of the early settlers. Views above 2100ft were completely obstructed by fog. Three from the North Carolina side and two from the Tennessee side The easiest is from the Parson Branch Road if it is open (see getting there). Great views, little traffic, good forest.Incredible view of Cades Cove from the bald. Wolf Ridge begins and actually climbs back up a little to Parsons Bald - a double punishment, given the exhausting ascent and Parsons' lack of actual baldness. The guide will familiarize you with the Long Hungry Ridge Trail and the mountain, Gregory Bald. Once we arrived on Gregory Bald it was awesome to see. At least I only have 3 more miles until my warm car carries me home.Deer tracks? Starting from the Twentymile Trailhead, head north along the Wolf Ridge Trail and follow this pretty woods trail to Gregory Bald before continuing southeast down the Long Hungry Ridge Trail. Gregory Bald was extremely windy and foggy. I shall call it Parsons Rogaine from now on. Again, it really is a good hike, the bald is very cool, and it is rewarding workout. Water is a few tenths of a mile down a side trail.Wolf Ridge Trail: After passing the summit of Parson Bald, on the way down from Gregory, continue onto Wolf Ridge Trail. ... a high country grassy glade between Gregory Bald and Parson Bald. During the rainy season, the crossing will probably be wet.The Long Hungry Ridge Trail finally leaves Twentymile Creek and climbs 0.40 mile to cross Rye Patch Branch.Climbing from Rye Patch Branch, the path became more trail-like.2.50 miles from Upper Flats campsite, the trail reaches Rye Patch. There's another campsite atop the bald just under a mile away that we stayed at. But the filtered water is delicious and sweet. At first I thought they might be wild boar, which I know are common in this area of the park, but they look too narrow.The last 3 miles tick by quickly, and I am thankful for the many well-constructed footbridges crossing Twentymile Creek which is raging! I have had deer come within inches of me while relaxing in a hammock. There are some campsites that require a reservation number and the closest campsite, #13 is one of them.
Twentymile Ranger Station is at an elevation of about 1325' It is due south of Cades Cove, but Gregory Bald and a lot of other mountains block access. The large bald area has good views in all directions. A half mile or so up the Gregory Bald Trail, I see a blue jacket on the hill in the distance. What will it be like now?Turns out, it’s not at all dangerous when using caution, but it does require me to remove my shoes and socks and walk through it.
